FRED THUMANN

UPDATE: Fred Thumann’s “Celebration of Life”

As all of you may already know, Fred Thumann, a great shuffleboard player and fun-loving, compassionate person from Auburn, California, passed away on Thursday, January 27, 2005.  He was 59 years old.  Genuine, sincere, compassionate, mischievous, wild, crazy, are all words that have been used to describe this man who brightened and enriched the lives of everyone he came in contact with.  His passing will leave a void not soon filled and he will be remembered fondly and missed profoundly by all those who had the privilege of knowing him.

HISTORY: Approximately 1 year ago, Fred was diagnosed with lung cancer.   In April 2004 he underwent surgery and a part of one lung was removed.  Doctors were hopeful and he began a regimen of chemotherapy to keep the cancer from recurring.  Unfortunately, last week, he was admitted to the hospital where doctors discovered a blood clot in his remaining lung.  Attempts to dissolve the clot were not successful and he died at the hospital.

FAMILY:  Fred was the remaining member of the family to which he was born.  His parents and his only sister all preceded him in death.  His Father died, nearly 30 years ago.  His Mother and sister within the last 10–12 years.

Fred is survived by his soul mate of 21 years, the loving and compassionate Lois McCabe, whom many of you know.  Fred also had a son and a daughter.  His son Andrew, age 27 lived with him and Lois.  His daughter Hillary age 31 and her husband Chris Calavitta live in Austin, TX and blessed Fred with his granddaughter Sofia Rose who was born just last year.

Of course, his long relationship with Lois included her children, 6 grandchildren and even some great grand children.  Lois’ three children are Shannon, Joe & Rob.  Shannon lives in Auburn, CA; Joe & his wife Shawna live in Woodland, CA and Rob lives in Washougal, WA.

INTERESTS:  Outside of his LOVE for shuffleboard, Fred also enjoyed quiet times fishing with his son Andy, his dog Buddy (always a faithful companion, whom he just had to put down in November), bowling (what’s that???) and occasionally donned Moose antlers in support of his local lodge.*

*Author’s note:  Only Fred could get away with wearing antlers, napkins in his nose and ears and a matching bra!!

LIFE WORK:  Fred (and Lois) owned and operated a transfer dump truck service since 1987.  Additionally they owned and operated a landscaping and yard service business.  Freddie was “hard working” and “hard-playing” all of his life.

SERVICES:  Fred’s family, complying with his wishes, will join Him and Buddy together at rest over the beautiful American River where they spent many a day fishing and enjoying each other’s company.

To honor Fred’s memory, his “Celebration of Life” will be held on Tuesday, February 22, 2005 from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Moose Lodge, 250 Sacramento Street, Auburn, CA 95603; phone number (530) 885-1013.  EVERYONE IS INVITED.  Come if you can, write a few lines if you can’t.   Donations being sent in lieu of flowers and/or to help Lois with expenses and tributes you would like read at the memorial should be sent to the:
